I have recently become active in the volunteer role at a stately home – it is something I’ve often wondered about, having had good experiences at some truly fabulous old properties on my travels around the country. What I didn’t appreciate until I took on this mantle myself, is how beautiful the grounds and gardens are from inside the house. I noted with interest that one of the owners of the house in years gone by had tried to capture the scene in oils. Amazingly the view was exactly the same – probably down to the cows lazing in the foreground. Recent photos of weddings in the very same location have lifted the great hall of this house. It’s never occured to me just how important making a historical note of surroundings is. Photography is the most perfect true way to capture how history rolls on but doesn’t alter the view.
